Coggers in The God Hunters of Vaeth

I am almost certain that my next game will be The God Hunters of Vaeth. This will be a continuation of the game, Gods of Aureata. The idea is that Gods have manifested in the world, bringing wild magic with them. This means the world has become a weirder and crazier place full of strange phenomena. The PCs are possessed by some Gods, but are able to keep them in check (as long as their gift values stay low enough.)

I am changing a bit of Gods of Aureata's setting. It'll be a bit more Tesla-Cyber-Punk in an urban fantasy setting. The world has always had the different Kin, they each developed well thanks to the difficulties of crossing the oceans.

As I am considering changing everything to a d6 pool system, I am putting everything into 6x6 tables. Thus I needed to invent two new Kin. Here is the first of them.

The Coggers

The Coggers are Vaethir powered autonomous servitors. They have 2 chicken-like legs that support an egg shaped pod, with the narrow end at the bottom. They then have two appendages that extend from the pod, usually these are articulated arms with 3 or 4 fingered hands. They stand about 5.5 feet tall, 170cm, and standard articulators are about as strong as an average human.

The Coggers were designed by York & Shim, Inc., a corporate entity that has since gone out of business. At first the Coggers were merely robots, but the strangeness of the Vaethir granted them the Spark of Sentience. Even though York & Shim, Inc. had other robots that they sold, for some reason, it was only this particular design that gained sentience. In some places it is still legal to own Coggers, but in many places they are considered to be a new group of people. They have freedom fighters trying to free their brethren in the not-so-enlightened regions that keep them enslaved. They often create their own boroughs within cities and have developed their own culture.

The six backgrounds for Coggers are:

  • A Cog Cutter is an artisan. Cogs are needed to keep in repair, but also have social significance to show the work completed by a Cogger. Coggers will go to Cog Cutters to purchase new, well-crafted Cogs, as well as, to have their old cogs formed into jewelry and ornaments. Cog Cutters usually have very precise manipulators and tool attachments.
  • A Wailing Widget is an entertainer. They have special mechanisms placed inside that will form pleasing sounds. They will often come together and synchronize their mechanisms to form melodies and songs. A gifted Wailer can manipulate the speed and pitch of their mechanisms to provide superior performances and can mimic nearly any sound they hear. The mechanisms are hidden within the bodies of the Cogger.
  • A Vaethir Keeper is a farmer. These Coggers have larger batteries that take up space where other mechanisms would normally be held. Their chassis are bulkier than normal, and their articulators tend to have extra strength. They will have ports where other Coggers can plug-in when they have over drained their own batteries.
  • A Spark Spitter is a Fighter. They are equipped with various electrical armaments that enhance their attacks in combat.Examples could include a static shield, shocking punches, or a near range Tesla cannon. It is these brave Coggers who fought for their legal rights, and earned their place on equal footing with the other Kin of Vaeth.
  • A Void Rigger is an Occultist. Coggers, being non-living entities, have no after life. Once the Sentient Spark leaves a Cogger, they simply cease to be. This is known as the Void. The Church of Collective Consciousness is a nomadic group of gnostics that collects the experience and memories of living and deceased Coggers. They download the memories of any individual that allows them to, and combines them into a massively combined informational array, that can then be queried and accessed. They say this is to preserve the memory and work of those that have fallen to the void, but others believe it is wrong to lump all memories and experiences together.
  • A Data Shade is a Scholar. Data Shades specialize in analyzing, finding, and obtaining information. They have specialized components that makes hacking and tinkering with information systems quicker and easier. Data Shades are often described as either Shades of White for those that work in informational security or Shades of Black for those that perform informational espionage.
